After so much excitement to leave our slip in Brisbane, we hurried to the Gate so we could get to Half Moon Bay before dark and keep to our schedule for the rest of the week. To our complete surprise there was low-hanging fog starting to roll in! This wasn’t at all in our expectations. We looked at the weather, the wind, the waves but did not consider the potential for fog! We could hear the fog horns just under the bridge as we approached it. The sound of the horns made every molecule in my body scream out ”Don’t go through the Gate!”
I shared my concern with Peter and he immediately said, “Let’s just anchor in Richardson Bay. Easy. We don’t have to push it”. Later a friend shared a link of satellite images that showed a thick blanket of fog down the coast into Monterey!
Once we got into protected waters outside of Sausalito, everything seemed to slow down. We anchored and then sat listening to the fog horns for a while. Funny enough, they sounded beautiful and less threatening to my ears! It was calm but also lively inside Richardson Bay. We watched the boats coming and going while we rocked gently by their wakes.
There was plenty of sunlight left to the day. The heat got us to jump straight into the water for a swim! We washed off the sweat from the hard work we did earlier, making the bay just that much saltier. It was such a push to finally untie the lines and now we had the opportunity to actually slow down, cool off and relax, enabling us to really take in the beauty of the bay one last time.
Oh, San Francisco! We’ll miss your beauty and everything you had to offer us, especially, all the friendships we formed over the past 24 years. We are grateful for all that brought us to this moment.
so beautiful!
Great decision you made, and it paid back with a swim! You guys are now professional adventurers. So excited for you!
